Master of Arts (MA) in Guidance Counselling & Lifespan Development 2019-2021

Master of Arts (MA) in Guidance Counselling & Lifespan Development 2019-2021

Overview
The MA programme (Level 9, 90 ECTS) offers a professional qualification in guidance counselling for practicing
teachers and other professionals who wish to become qualified guidance counsellors. It provides training in
the required knowledge, skills and competencies of guidance counselling within the specialised areas of
personal, social, educational and career guidance, across the lifespan. The strong focus on personal
development on the programme strives to promote self-understanding and insight for a deeper appreciation
of the counselling process. Therefore, participants are required to undertake external supervision through an
accredited counsellor, psychologist or psychotherapist in each academic year.
The programme is offered part-time over two academic years. It consists of a combination of taught modules
across, professional practicum placement component of 150 hours (i.e. Main Placement of 125 hours, and
Alternative Placement of 25 hours) and research dissertation. The average tuition contact time per week for
each of the first three semesters is six hours, with a reduction in Semester 2, Year 2 to account for the demands
of undertaking a research dissertation. However, the programme requires a significant level of personal
commitment from participants in terms of attendance, contribution, self-directed learning and their own time
management.

The number of places on the programme is limited.
