TL21 PROGRAMME – TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY
THE TL21 PROGRAMME IS A WORKSHOP BASED CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FOR TEACHERS AND SCHOOL LEADERS THAT PROMOTES INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGIC PRACTICE AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES IN POST-PRIMARY SCHOOLS. THE PROGRAMME HAS BEEN RUNNING SINCE 2003 AND IS NOW ENTERING ITS 20TH YEAR OR TENTH PROGRAMME CYCLE. THE PROGRAMME IS A RESEARCH-LED ONE AND THREE OF ITS MAIN AIMS ARE:
- TO STRENGTHEN TEACHERS’ CAPACITIES AS CO-OPERATIVE AND SELF-CRITICAL AUTHORS OF THEIR OWN WORK.
- TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO TAKE AN ACTIVE AND RESPONSIBLE PART IN THEIR OWN LEARNING.
- TO ADDRESS THE ISOLATION AND INSULATION THAT TEACHERS CAN, AND DO, EXPERIENCE IN THEIR DAY-TO-DAY PROFESSIONAL LIVES.

In the 2021-2023 cycle 70+ schools and 400+ teachers and senior school leaders were actively involved. A new cycle of the programme (2023-2025) will begin in September 2023 and recruitment for this cohort is now beginning.
Carrick on Shannon Education Support Centre is delighted to now invite your school to participate in the 'Teaching and Learning for the Twenty-First Century' (TL21) Programme beginning in September 2023. You will work with a cluster of post-primary schools in the Carrick on Shannon Education Support Centre's catchment area and the following is a brief outline of what is involved for schools that participate in TL21:
- The TL21 Programme is a two-year programme.
- The programme is not a series of lectures; rather a series of collaborative professional development workshops planned in a developmental sequence.
- There will be 5 workshop sessions in a school year.
- Each school may like to suggest the themes or aspects of teaching and learning they would like to address: e.g. assessment, AfL strategies, differentiation etc.
- Each participating school will have the opportunity to progress the chosen theme(s) in their own school and report back on progress to the whole group of schools participating.
- Ideally there should be five participating teachers per school, and the Principal or a Deputy Principal.
- Full attendance is expected.
Note:
A university accreditation path has previously been available for those TL21 participants wishing to pursue an M.Ed. degree by action research (three years in total). It is expected that this will be the case for the 2023/25 co-hort. Participants following this path take some research workshops in Maynooth University as well as the professional development workshops in the Education Centre.
To support you in making a decision and committing to TL21, we have arranged an Information Session for Principals and/or Deputy Principals/Teachers via Zoom on Tuesday 18th September @ 6pm.
