History is concerned with the study of political, social and economic structures of the past. It is more than memorising facts and dates. It analyses trends and events and why they happened in a particular way. This course will explore the countryside and the towns of Longford and Leitrim. A key feature of the course is a series of local tours visiting a different location each day.
DAY 1: Wednesday 1st July - Longford Town.
We will do a walking tour of Longford town learning about the canal, the river Camlin, historical buildings, churches, parks and regeneration of the town. Meeting at St Micheal's N.S. Eircode N39AX75.
DAY 2: Thursday 2nd July - Drumshanbo.
We will do a walking tour of Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim with a local guide. We will learn about the history and heritage of the town taking in Acres lake, the Poor Clare Convent, and various other landmarks. EIRCODE TO MEET -N41KP68
DAY 3: Friday 3rd July - Edgeworthstown and Legan Co Longford.
We will gather at the Edgeworthstown Centre and Museum. It has been recently upgraded and interesting artefacts have been added to the collection. We will learn about the Edgeworth connection to the establishment of the Primary Schools system in Ireland. We then visit the Foxhall estate in Legan and Lady’s Well mass rock a few miles from Edgeworthstown. EIRCODE TO MEET - N39E3C8.
DAY 4: Monday 6th July. Arigna mining experience.
There will be a guided tour of the mine. Later on we will visit The Barracks in Cootehall a unique centre remembering John McGahern. EIRCODE TO MEET - N41YP78.
DAY 5: Tuesday 7th July. GRANARD AND BALINALEE.
We will gather in the Library in Granard where we learn about the history and culture of Granard. We will hear about the GRANARD Harp Festival and its signifance. Later we will move to Ballinalee and hear its many stories. EIRCODE TO MEET - N39D2N4

All our summer courses are booked on the condition that the course fee is non-refundable. Course Fees are not transferrable to another teacher. Unfortunately, if you wish to cancel your place on one of our courses or you are unable to attend the course, we are not in a position to refund fees. The course fee can only be refunded if the Education Centre cancels the course.
