The course is ideal for teachers involved with 3rd-6th class, aims to give participants an opportunity to look at online databases and resources suitable for use in an Irish classroom during history.

The facilitator will bring up the databases on screen and walk the teachers through how they can be used for project work, local history, commemoration and research.

The census of 1901, for example, is freely available online and a very interesting way to look at a local area and how thing have changed as regards languages spoken, types of houses, numbers of children etc. The Ellis Island database gives the name of every person who passed through Ellis Island on their way to emigrating to Amercia and will be looked at in detail. Other databases looked at will include the Bureau of Military History, National Library of Ireland digital photo gallery, Irish Newspaper Archive etc all of which can teach children so much about the past.

The facilitator will then look at other online resources which can be used to bring a lesson to life. One example, Kahoot, will be used and teachers will be shown how children can make interactive quizzes based on any topic. Mentimeter will be looked at also, showing how to use interactive polls and surveys to get the most out of a lesson. Other websites looked at will include DK Findout, Ask About Ireland, Abandoned Schoolhouses of Ireland and many more.
